The analysis of a case study approach allows in-depth, multi-faceted explorations of complex issues in their real-life settings. The value of the case study approach is well recognised in the fields of business, law and policy, but somewhat less so in health services research.
The analysis of a case study can show what a company has done to position itself positively within a certain market, or it can show how a company has failed, to understand how not to repeat its mistakes. The case study approach is particularly useful to employ when there is a need to obtain an in-depth appreciation of an issue, event or phenomenon of interest, in its natural real-life context.
